Hidden Facts about Diet Food
The first thing and probably the worst thing that many people do when starting a diet is gravitate toward the ‘diet food’ aisle, of the grocery store. I was guilty of this myself, until I saw how high-priced everything… or almost everything was.
The diet food industry is a multimillion dollar business. They want dieters to believe that the only way to lose weight and be healthy is to purchase their product. Yes, there are prepackaged diet foods that are really quite good and for the most part healthy. But unfortunately, there are others that we would probably all be better off without.
What you have to remember is that ‘low-fat’ doesn’t necessarily mean ‘low-cal’. Take diet candy, for example. Normally when the fat content is removed from candy much of the taste goes with it. To make up for the lack of flavor, manufacturers add more sugar.
So in a nutshell, the calories that are eliminated when the fat is reduced are simply replaced by the ones contained in sugar. Bummer, huh? I guess the moral of the story is to eat regular candy but eat a whole lot less.
If you eat a great deal of salad, chances are you will find this interesting. The majority of dieters prepare their salad using iceberg lettuce. It’s usually the least expensive choice. But, iceberg lettuce is not as nutritious as darker or even mixed salad greens.
One serving of iceberg lettuce, which is about 1/6 of the head, is terribly lacking when it comes to vitamin A, iron and fiber. It only has 4%, 2% and 6% respectively.
On the other hand, one serving of raw spinach, which equals about 2-1/2 cups, contains 70%, 20% and 19% respectively. That is a huge difference. Maybe we should all consider eating more spinach.
When it comes to choosing the bread that is healthiest for you, opt for whole-grain. Some people think that wheat bread is basically the same, but it isn’t. Wheat bread is usually just white bread with a bit of wheat flour thrown in. Whole wheat bread has actual whole-grains baked in.

And sodium. A lot of prepackaged diet foods, (Smart Ones by Weight Watchers are particularly prone to this) have over half your daily allotment of sodium in one meal. Those “Free” soups from Progresso? Vegetable flavored salt lick.

I agree entirely. The pre-packaged ‘lite’ meals are the worst, they make people think that they are getting a good, healthy meal when in reality all they are doing is paying more for the privilege of being fed junk.

It really is all about choices isn’t it?? I’ve been chronicling my vegetarian journey… just 11 days old (oh wait…. nearly 12 now LOL) Anyway, I haven’t eaten much in the way of processed meals, but like Carrie in your story, snacking is a HUGE issue, and even ‘diet food’ (pretzels?? blech!)
Anyway…I was surfing tonight and stumbled across your blog. You’ve got some really great stuff here!
My readers would think so as well, and we all can use a little inspiration. If you were so inclined, would you mind dropping by and adding your blog link to the BE Naturally Well community? We would love to see you there. (kind of a link exchange but better!)
and that way I can keep up on your progress too!

Someone told me that if you shop the first and last aisles of the supermarket you’re doing all right (the produce and the refridgerated sections). That way you are sticking to more natural foods. The packaged stuff is convenient (and tasty) but generally not as good for you.
But boy do I wish I loved spinach as much as I do candy! hehe

Many fast food outlets pretend to provide healthy meals by adding iceberg lettuce (due to it lasting longer than the dark variety) and irradiated tomatoes. Therefore no vitamins and still just a meal of unhealthy fats and additives.

Great post! On a daily basis people are becoming more and more aware of the benefits of keeping a healthy body. You will be amazed at how great your body feels after you commit to a life style change and take that first big step. A healthy diet and exercise plan are essential. If you live a hectic lifestyle like most of us do perhaps a home gym would be something to look into. You will gain so much more than you will ever be giving up after you make this step.
Great post. Often times people think that that the best way to ‘diet’ is to but diet food. But really the best way to eat healthy, and try not to think of it as a diet. As I have learned food that is healthy can also be delicious.
I have been working on health site called peoplesmd.com. There is some great information on diet, fitness, and healthy lifestyle. It’s a great way to keep track of your favorite sites, and find new ones. I think you guys would really like it!
I agree with you. It is so true that we dont see the nutritious value of what ever we are eating when we are on a diet. Like there are many diet plans in which you only take proteins or only eat bananas. Remember one thing access of anything is not good for your body. So have a balance diet and do some exercise in order to remain healthy
Hi Wu Yi Tea Guru, this fact might be true when you go for a fad diet. Recently I come across Jenny Craig. It is a balance healthy diet plan, maybe you can do some research on the diet plan. It migh be a bit expensive (around $500 per month)but very convenient(pre-packaged meal are delivered directly to your door) and is a balanced diet base on 60 % carbs, 20% fat and 20% protein.
